How AMOSS works

  • Case identification will be prospective.
  • Non-identifiable data are collected on selected AMOSS conditions (known as the AMOSS data collection).
  • A data coordinator is nominated within each maternity unit.
  • Electronic monthly reporting on rare conditions are used with a negative reporting system in place.
  • Incidence and case-control studies are conducted.
  • Only population level data will be published and findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, presentations, the AMOSS annual report and newsletters.
  • An established national clinical reference group will advise and agree upon conditions to be monitored.
  • New conditions will be added on an annual basis

The preliminary conditions that are studied from 2010 include:

  • Antenatal pulmonary embolus
  • Amniotic fluid embolism
  • Eclampsia
  • Morbid obesity (BMI >50)
  • Placenta accreta
  • Peripartum hysterectomy
  • Influenza in pregnancy (ICU admission)
